Mountaineering Expeditions

Bolivian Andes – Mountain Guides International

Over the next years, the team will be embarking on a series of mountaineering expeditions in the Andes and locations such as Kilimanjaro and the Himalayas. Though the basics of mountaineering movements have a lot to do with climbing, there is much to learn in this aspect – using crampons, ice-axes, different roping techniques, and the added problems of ice-falls and traversing glaciers with crevasses – somethings that can be quite hazardous and all which need to be gotten to grips with.

We have just come back from a one month to journey through the Bolivian Andes on a high altitude mountaineering expedition. After a weeks’ acclimatization at La Paz (the highest capital city in the world) and the Salar de Uyuni salt flats, we worked with Mountain Guides International in climbing the Huayna Potosi, (19,968′/6088m) and the “shining one” Illimani (21,125′ / 6439m), as well as Pequeño Alpamayo.

In the course of the expedition, as well as experiencing climbing at high altitudes, we also practiced advanced mountaineering techniques; learned and advanced our snow and glacier skills – skills which will be integral in our attempts to reach the North and South Poles.

This was the first of a number of mountaineering training projects that will ensure the team is as well prepared as possible for the challenges ahead.
